Space Shooter
PICO-8 Retro Game
About this project
Space Shooter is a retro-style arcade game developed using PICO-8, a fantasy console designed for making small games. This project showcases pixel art skills, game development fundamentals, and creative problem-solving within strict technical constraints. PICO-8's limitations (128x128 pixel display, 16-color palette, limited code space) encouraged creative solutions and tight, efficient code. The game features classic shoot-'em-up mechanics, custom pixel art sprites, and original chiptune music.
Key Features
- Classic arcade-style shoot-'em-up gameplay
- Custom pixel art sprites and animations
- Original chiptune music and sound effects
- Progressive difficulty with wave-based enemy spawning
- Power-ups and weapon upgrades
- High score tracking
- Smooth 60 FPS gameplay despite PICO-8 constraints
- Particle effects for explosions and projectiles

Creative Constraints
PICO-8's deliberately limited specifications (128x128 screen, 16 colors, 32KB code limit) force developers to think creatively and optimize ruthlessly. Every sprite, every line of code, and every sound effect had to be carefully crafted to fit within these constraints. This limitation actually enhanced creativity, leading to focused design decisions and polished core mechanics.
The pixel art was created entirely within PICO-8's built-in sprite editor, working within the 16-color palette. Each enemy type, power-up, and effect was designed to be visually distinct and readable on the small screen. The animation system uses sprite flipping and rotation to maximize variety without using excessive sprite slots.
This project demonstrates that strong fundamentals in game feel, visual design, and user feedback can create an engaging experience regardless of technical sophistication. The skills developed here—working within constraints, optimizing code, and crafting cohesive audio-visual experiences—translate directly to professional web development.
